Answering the Call of God

(part one)

by John Adair

Answering the call of God is the most fulfilling journey anyone could ever pursue. It is also the one that appears contrary to today's living. The emphasis in our world today centers around self preservation, self protection and self promotion. All these areas will be abandoned by the person that seeks to discover God and answer His call.

The book of John gives us this account "So when the crowd realized he (Jesus) was gone and wasn't coming back, they piled into the Tiberias boats and headed for Capernaum, looking for Jesus. When they found him back across the sea, they said, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" Jesus answered, "You've come looking for me not because you saw God in my actions but because I fed you, filled your stomachs--and for free. "Don't waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last." To that they said, "Well, what do we do then to get in on God's works?" Jesus said, "Throw your lot in with the One that God has sent. That kind of a commitment gets you in on God's works." (John 6:24-29 MSG)

When I was a child, we sometimes would pray over our meals. It was a simple prayer "God is good, God is great, let us thank Him for our food, amen." Though the prayer is simple, it has a powerful message, first that God is good. To answer the call of God, you must believe God is good. Believing God is good will strengthen your heart. Realizing that God is the good one in our relationship will keep the focus on His goodness and righteousness and not our own. If our relationship with God is because we are good, we are setting ourselves up for a great fall and heartache. Knowing God is good, is to know that He is good because of who He is and not because we have done good. God is good because, God IS good! He is a good being, a good God, a good friend and a good Father. Keeping our focus that all blessings, honor and glory that may come to us, is because God is good and not because we are being good.

What we see next is God is great. Jesus urges the followers to earnestly seek after the things that eternal. Jesus fed the people with food for their stomach and satisfied their hunger, because He is good. He will always supply our need and sustain us with what we need, because God is good, but Jesus also urged them to seek the things that have a longer lasting affect, the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God and His way of living., Jesus gave them what was good, but called them to what is great. Answering the call of God is to do good, while pursuing what is great.

What is great? It is God, He is great. As we seek His face, welcome His prescence and seek the desire of His heart, we will begin to experience the greatness of God. To see the greatness of God, we must release to Him all that we consider to be great and allow Him to show us His greatness. God wants us to see Him for Who He is and that He is far more able to meet our every need and desire, He is not limited to the knoweldge or experience we have of Him.

The last part of the meal time prayer was, "let us thank Him for our food." Although we were thanking Him for the food that was in front of us, He supplied it before we bought it, cooked it and sat down to eat it. We were giving thanks for what we were about to eat, but He provided it before we were ready to eat it. Answering the call of God requires faith. We will be required to surrender what we see for what we don't see, but just like the food, He supplied the food before we physically obtained it. So as we thank Him for the food that He has given, we can also thank Him without seeing , the supply He has provided for us before we physically see it.

Answering the call of God is what Jesus is proding the followers to do when He instructs them to cast their lot with the One that God has sent. He says, this kind of commitment gets us in on what God is doing. Answering the call of God is not trying to establish your works or ministry, but casting all that you have in this life at the feet of the master, Jesus Christ to be used for His purpose. Our focus in answering His call, is to allow Him to be our source of supply and in doing so, we are free to give all that we possess. We must believe that He will supply and repay everything from knowledge to substance as we pursue relationship with Him and seek to do His will.

One that is called, surrenders all that they have to be in service to Him. Sure we need to eat, we need clothes, we have all sorts of various needs and the Master is aware of these things and we must be aware that God is good, God is Great and we can thank Him for His provision that comes by His mighty hand.

To answer the call of God, we must be willing to allow His Holy Spirit to become our source of supply. We must believe He is a miracle working God and will allow us to walk in the miraculous as we walk with Him.

Every person that has a desire to serve God has a call from God to serve. What does God want us to do? How does He want us to serve Him? Where do we start and how do we know we are doing the right thing? All of these questions and more can become overwhelming, but God has an answer for each of these questions and has made the power available to us, that we might fulfill the call of God in our lives.

What does God want us to do? He wants us to answer His call. To answer His call you must first say yes! Yes, Lord here I am. I am willing to surrender, willing to answer and willing to serve, here I am.

The call of God begins with a desire in your heart to serve. If you have a desire then you have a call. The next step is saying YES to the One Who calls.

Saying yes, you will follow Him, saying yes, you will surrender all and saying yes, you will pursue His call.

Wait no longer - if you have had a hunger for God, a desire to know Him and walk with Him, then say YES LORD, HERE AM I.

We will cover more about "Answering the call of God" in our next newsletter.
