The Baptism of the Holy Spirit
by John Adair |

| The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is an experience and a gift. As we came to understand the term "Baptism" as described in the word study of "Water Baptism," the word "Baptize" means more than a sprinkle.
Baptism actually means "to dip, immerse, submerge". In the case of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, it is an immersion into the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ Himself is the actual baptizer into the Holy Spirit - John 1:33 "And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. " This was spoken by John the Baptist about Jesus Christ. It is the desire, will and commandment of Jesus, that all who believe in Him would receive and accept the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is for every believer in Jesus Christ to receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38, 39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Receiving the Holy Spirit will empower you to be a witness for Jesus and enable you to grow in an intimate personal relationship with Him. Acts 1:1-5 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit will transition your experience with God from God dwelling in your midst to indwelling you. When you ask and receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, you will discover a whole new dimension into the things of God. As God in the Old Testament found His temple and dwelling place with His people in the temple built with the hands of man, in the New Covenant with Jesus, man himself becomes the temple of God, where God desires to dwell. Jesus eluded to this phenomenon in Matt 26:61 "... I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days." Referring not to the temple building itself, but the temple of His body as in the crucifixion and then the resurrection. The scripture confirms this transition of dwelling "among" men to dwelling "in" man in Heb 9:1-11 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Paul the apostle also confirms this phenomenon in 2Co 6:16 ... for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 1Co 3:17 ...for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate event from when you first believe as we see in the Book of Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit requires you to believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, that He rose from the dead and is alive today. Then for to you ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Because of the goodness of God, He desires to give us what is good Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? It is God's desire to fill us with life and the sustanance with which to live the life He intends John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts which He brings are not something we can purchase, earn or barter for to gain Acts 8:18-24 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit bestows gifts within us to minister unto others and to increase our intimate relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and God. 1Co 12:1-13 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. Some tend to believe the evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is evident through the gifts, such as speaking in tongues (for more on this gift see Gift of Tongues). But the true evidence is love, the love for God, Jesus Christ, and the love for mankind. 1Co 13:1-3 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. There is no method or formula to receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, beyond believing in Jesus Christ and surrendering to receive, that you may be empowered to share His love and to be a witness of Him. Scriputre details the Baptism of the Holy Spirit being given when they were baptized in water, Acts 2:38, 39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Scriputre details the Baptism of the Holy Spirit being given before they were baptized in water, Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Scriputre details the Baptism of the Holy Spirit being given after they believed, Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. The question now remains, "Have you been Baptized with the Holy Spirit?" Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord God, Who died for your sins, rose from the dead and is alive today? If you believe, you may receive. Pray this aloud right now - Jesus, I believe in you as my Lord and my God. I trust in your sacrifice for my sins and righteousness. I ask for your gift of the Holy Spirit to fill me now that I may be your witness and servant. Thank you for hearing my prayer and I receive your Holy Spirit. Welcome Holy Spirit, thank you! In Jesus Name, Amen. If you prayed this today, please let us know, that we may continue to walk with you in the power of God and our great salvation - Click Here |
