Skits | Musicals | Jam Sessions

Skits - Skits are a great way to reach out and minister the gospel.

A skit can be done in any length, 3 minutes upward to 20 minutes.

Anything longer becomes an actual play and more complex. With a skit, the props can be minimum or not at all. It could be a complete pantomime or with music. Lip sync is also a great illustrator. The skit should have 3 basic elements to it, the problem, the diagnoses and the solution. Then of course is the ending, what the solutions did to solve the problem.

Skits are versatile so you can address any situation or problem and bring it back to Christ as the solution. Be innovative and something that you find interesting.

They can be done just about anywhere and even in the spur of the moment. You may find a whole routine would be welcomed in your local school, club, church or neighborhood park.

You may not find everyone appreciative or responsive, but I have a little saying that “Everyone has the right talent for what they want to do, they just have to apply it often enough to find their audience.”

This is certainly true in regards to any type of performance, but especially with a skit orientation.

Musicals - These are usually some pretty big projects, but can have a great pull in the local community.

Let’s keep in mind however, that it is to reach the lost and seeking, if even just one. It’s not about getting people to church or to attend our function.

Musicals can develop from many sources. There are pre-written scripts and music or you can write your own.

The usual musical is for the C&E crowd, Christmas and Easter. These are the most common, but something out of the ordinary could prove just as successful.

Casting is always easy from inside our own circles, but developing the production can be an outreach in itself. Open up the casting call to the community. Let people try out for the parts, give the community a chance to participate in the crew and the many tasks that come with putting on the production.

I realize the fears someone might have, of the many types of people you could draw into the church and your ministry, but let’s face it, that’s what the church is suppose to do.

So let’s open it up to everyone and give our fellow worshippers an opportunity to meet, greet and love people from all walks of life. Let’s be the salt of the earth and bring in our community.

Ticket charges should never be an issue. We should always plan a budget for the production and keep it free for those that attend.

These should never turn into fund raisers, because it deters from the ultimate purpose.

By opening it up to the community you may find additional funding from unexpected places, but nonetheless, when people in a congregation have a vision for something, the money is usually there to back it.

Jam Sessions - Musicians love getting together and just playing their instruments together. There are many buildings, church’s, that are unoccupied on certain nights, that otherwise could become havens for musicians to come and jam together.

Opening it up to musicians everywhere and allowing the public to come in and enjoy, is a great way of bringing people together.

If the building is going to be empty, put it to use. This costs only the price of the electricity for the building. What a great investment into the souls of men.
